Beginner

Beginner sewing patterns teach the most foundational sewing techniques. These patterns focus on the basics like sewing and finishing straight and curved seams, hemming, and simple shaping methods such as darts and gathers. In addition, beginner patterns omit closures, making them perfect if you are new to sewing or are looking for a quick and easy make.

Advanced Beginner

Advanced Beginner sewing patterns expand on the skills learned at the beginner level, helping you to build confidence and range as a sewer. You'll find simple knitwear projects, bias tape finishing techniques, and begin to explore closures at this skill level.

Intermediate

Intermediate level sewing patterns focus on more precision sewing. In this skill level, you'll learn specialty closures. Intermediate patterns also introduce the skills needed for simple lingerie and athletic wear projects.

Advanced

Advanced sewing patterns require great precision and time investment. You'll find tailored pieces in this category with elevated details like bound buttonholes and welt pockets.

Description

The Kirby Shorts Sewing Patterns

Meet the Kirby Shorts, your new warm-weather essential. Kirby has a relaxed fit that sits at the natural waist, with a topstitched elastic waistband so you can easily pull them on. Slash pockets, accented with decorative flaps secured by buttons or snaps, add a charming touch. A right-hand back waist patch pocket also features a button or snap for a cohesive look. The 2” hem cuff and 4” inseam strike the perfect balance between style and coverage.

Fabric & Supplies

Medium weight woven fabrics such as cotton twill, linen, linen blends, denim, chambray, and rayon twill. Felicia is wearing Kirby in a Tan Softened Organic Cotton and Crosby is wearing Kirby in a Cotton Striped Canvas.

Lightweight woven linings such as cotton lawn, cotton shirting, cotton poplin, acetate, rayon, and silk.

All-purpose polyester sewing thread, sewing machine needle, 1 1/2 yards (1.4 meters) of 1 1/4" (3.2 cm) braided elastic, three 5/8" (15 mm) buttons or snaps, 1/4 yard (.23 meters) fusible interfacing, and a bodkin or large safety pin.

Refer to size chart for amount of fabric needed for your size.

00 – 30

Sizing & Fit

Felicia is wearing a size 8 Kirby shorts. Her measurements are waist: 29" (73.7 cm), hip: 39" (99 cm), and she is 5'8" (172.75 cm) tall. The Kirby shorts are paired here with the Kristin top hacked to have a square neckline.

Crosby is wearing a size 16 Kirby shorts, from our 12 - 30 size range. We shortened the elastic by 1". Her measurements are waist: 36" (91.5 cm), hip: 47 3/8" (120.3 cm), and she is 5' 10" (177.8 cm) tall. The Kirby shorts are paired here with the Riley top member bonus.

00 – 30

Sizes 00-18 (Misses) are drafted for a C cup. Our size 8 fit model is 5’8”. Sizes 12-30 (Curvy) are drafted for a DD cup. Our size 20 fit model is 5’9”. Learn more about our sizing here
