Beginner

Beginner sewing patterns teach the most foundational sewing techniques. These patterns focus on the basics like sewing and finishing straight and curved seams, hemming, and simple shaping methods such as darts and gathers. In addition, beginner patterns omit closures, making them perfect if you are new to sewing or are looking for a quick and easy make.

Advanced Beginner

Advanced Beginner sewing patterns expand on the skills learned at the beginner level, helping you to build confidence and range as a sewer. You'll find simple knitwear projects, bias tape finishing techniques, and begin to explore closures at this skill level.

Intermediate

Intermediate level sewing patterns focus on more precision sewing. In this skill level, you'll learn specialty closures. Intermediate patterns also introduce the skills needed for simple lingerie and athletic wear projects.

Advanced

Advanced sewing patterns require great precision and time investment. You'll find tailored pieces in this category with elevated details like bound buttonholes and welt pockets.

Description

Hooded jacket sewing pattern

You'll wear the Lou jacket for years to come. Lou is a fully lined, hooded jacket with a stylish A-line fit. The hem hits a few inches above the knee, and there are a few details that make this jacket so classic. It features a three-piece hood, shoulder yoke, and patch pockets with an angled flap. The sleeves have adjustable tabs you can cinch and snaps along the center front. This is a great project to learn how to do a bagged lining if you've never done one before!

Sew this jacket in medium-weight or heavyweight fabrics, like jacketings, canvas, denim, and twill. Since the design doesn't have a bunch of extra seams, this is a great project to sew in a water-resistant fabric for a fun raincoat!

Fabric & Supplies

Heavyweight woven fabrics such as canvas, denim, and twill, coatings, wax canvas, supplex, cordura nylon, or vinyl.

Light to medium weight woven lining fabrics such as cotton sateen, cotton flannel, silk habotai, rayon bemberg, acetate lining, or polyester lining.

All-purpose polyester sewing thread, sewing machine needle, hand-sewing needle, point turner, fifteen 1/2" (13mm) snaps, 1 3/4 yards (1.6 meters) of woven fusible interfacing.

Refer to size chart for amount of fabric needed for your size.

00 – 30

Sizing & Fit

Amarachi is wearing a size 4 Lou jacket with a broad shoulder adjustment. We added 1 3/8" (2.86 cm) to the sleeve length. Her measurements are 33 1/2" (85.09 cm), 26" (66.04 cm), 38 3/4" (98.43 cm), and she is 5'8" (1.72 m) tall.

Crosby is wearing a size 18 Lou jacket with a broad shoulder adjustment. Her measurements are 46” (116.8 cm), 36 1/2” (92.7 cm), 48” (121.9), and she is 5’10” (1.78 m) tall.

00 – 30

Sizes 00-18 (Misses) are drafted for a C cup. Our size 8 fit model is 5’8”. Sizes 12-30 (Curvy) are drafted for a DD cup. Our size 20 fit model is 5’9”. Learn more about our sizing here
